Dr. James Sedlis

Dr. James SedlisDr. James Sedlis is double Board Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in Pediatrics and Primary Care Sports Medicine. Dr. Sedlis joined Lemak Sports Medicine & Orthopedics in April 2013 with 15 years of experience in Pediatrics and Sports Medicine. Dr. Sedlis is fellowship trained in Sports Medicine by the American Sports Medicine Institute under the supervision of Dr. Larry Lemak.

Dr. Sedlis graduated from Pomona College in California with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. He received his MD from New York Medical College and completed a Pediatric Residency at New York University Medical Center. After completing his fellowship in Sports Medicine, he worked for Children’s Hospital of Alabama and UAB Sports Medicine. He left Birmingham to study one year of clinical Pediatric Rheumatology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Upon returning to Birmingham, he worked for two years at HealthyKids of Gardendale. In 2012, Dr. Sedlis was voted one of the city’s best Pediatric Doctors by Birmingham Parents Magazine.

He currently serves as the team physician for Chelsea High School, Chelsea Middle School, and the University of Montevallo. Prior to joining Lemak Sports Medicine, Dr. Sedlis served as the team physician for Samford University and Hueytown High School as well as volunteering as the doctor at Team Magic and Birmingham Track Club running events.

Dr. Sedlis has a strong interest in concussions and is certified in the use of ImPACT testing which is a Neurocognitive computerized concussion evaluation system utilized in concussion management. Dr. Sedlis is one of only a few in the State of Alabama who is certified in ImPACT testing. As a local expert in concussion management, Dr. Sedlis uses ImPACT testing to track recovery of cognitive processes following sports concussions and support safe return to play for athletes.

Dr. Sedlis is married to Amy and has 2 sons, Aaron and Jared. In his spare time, Dr. Sedlis enjoys spending time with his family, running, and downhill skiing. If he is not outdoors, he can be found at the Pelham Civic and Ice Arena where his sons are active in the Ice Hockey and Figure Skating programs.

Dr. Sedlis has several professional affiliations including membership with the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, and the American College of Rheumatology.
